AIR DEFENSE CENTER - CRAGSTAN (MAKER?) - JAPANA tall red lithographed tinplate battery operated console with radar screen and flashing lights.

The 1962 Sears catalog advertises this toy: "Radar scans sky.. warning lights blink.. missles fire! Air Defense Center is busy with action.. has rotating antenna and radar scope; winking lights; moving air speed register and altimeter. 3 rubber-tipped darts. Steel, 12 in. long."

Large oval rotating antenna. The box art depicts a military scene but the actual toy resembles the Masudaya range of similar control centres.

AMUSEMENT PARK ROCKET RIDE - YONE - JAPANYoneya's Jumping Rocket pressing has been used to create this rocket amusement ride. The lithographed tin wind up ride consists of a square tower with a beam fitted to the top. Two rockets with vinyl pilot heads rotate around the tower.

The wind up plastic Apollo USA module orbits in a figure of eight while spark emerge from the rear. A press of one of two buttons allows the module to orbit the Earth or the Moon separately. The lithographed tinplate toy comprises a square base with a hemispherical red and yellow moon surface. From the center of the cratered moon surface two wires extend, one with an orboting Apollo space capsule, the other has a lunar lander. Wind up rotating action. Japanese box version.

CAPE KENNEDY, PROJECT SWORD - CENTURY 21 TOYS - HONG KONGCentury 21Toys Very large plastic battery-operated launch pad and Apollo rocket. An adjustable crane lowers the ship onto the gantry. A hand held control drives the pad forwards and backwards on caterpillar tractors. The rocket is friction drive and about a foot long. The words Made in Hong Kong appear underneath.


Large oblong 2- piece box. The toy is called Cape Kennedy Three in one Toy. The artwork shows a painting of the rocket and gantry coming out of the hanger. On the box is Made in Hong Kong for Century 21 Limited? No reference to a badge on the box, although the set comes with the Official Manual and a plastic Sword badge

CONEY ISLAND ROCKET RIDE - ALPS - JAPANA light blue lithographed tn battery operated fairground ride. Circa 1960. Two red, yellow and blue rockets are on either side of a central beam and spin and light as they twirl around the tripod mounted tower. A bell rings. See also the Twirly Whirly variation.

DISTANT EARLY WARNING RADAR STATION - MASUDAYA - JAPANA large grey-black lithographed tinplate battery operated tracking station. It has the usual Masudaya rotating plastic antenna and the pylon tower with the flashing light and Morse sound. The novelty feature of this toy is its attempt to recreate a radar cathode ray tube.

The two craft travel around a figure of eight track with a detailed picture of a moon landing. Tin battery op track toy with Apollo capsule and plastic lander. An imaginative attempt to capture the intricacy of the Apollo moon landing operation.

DREAM JET MARS - ALPS? - JAPANAlps (assuming it is by them) didn't have to look far for the inspiration for this space rocket. It's a direct copy of the Pyro X-100 Space Scout.

A yellow lithographed tin friction rocket plane. It is a cross between a rocket and a jet plane with rocket motors mounted on the wing tips. Dream is printed on one wing, and Jet on the other. Mars is printed on the sides. The cockpit is covered a red plastic spark window. Friction action with noise and spark.

This is a litho variation of the Alps Space Scout X110 and is likely also to be by Alps, though this is still unconfirmed. Nomura has also been suggested as a maker.

СПУТНИК SPUTNIK MUSIC BOX - MAKER? - RUSSIABlue lithographed tinplate wind up musical box with space scenes. The tin box has a globe set into front with a channel surrounding it. A miniature space capsule orbits when a top lever is pulled. Makes a simple rhythmic plink-plonk noise. Russia 1950s The toy has beautiful fantastical lithography drawn from Russian folklore: witches on broomsticks, people flying on birds etc. USSR, Eastern Europe.

It is possible that the graphics relate to a 1956 Russian film called Старик Хоттабыч a fantasy comedy film produced in the USSR by Lenfilm in 1956 based on a children's book of the same name by Lazar Lagin.

ESTACION ESPACIAL SPACE STATION - GOFAR - SPAINA most unusual battery operated tin and metal space toy consisting of a 48cm cast metal rocket which acts as a central turret. A bar is suspended from the turret with a plane at one end and a counterweight at the other. A battery control box allows the plane to circle at variable speed. The box art is particularly attractive. Manufactured by Gofar Producciones SA Valencia.

A battery powered fan behind the arch shaped space scene supports a floating ping pong ball. Two pistols with darts. First seen in 1960 when it appeared in the Niresk 1960 Book of Gifts

Note the misspelling "sattellite" in the lower version. It's possible that this is the earlier of the two

Made by Michael Seidel. Founded 1881 in Zirndorf near Nuremberg. Schopper is also from Zirndorf. It´s possible that those toy companies - Schopper/Fuchs/Seidel - changed toy parts, not unusual for German toy producers.

HELICOPTER ME-632 - CHINAThis is considered to be one of the finest of Chinese space toys. This is a dark blue lithographed tinplate battery operated space helicopter. This unusual spaceship is a flying wing, with two large helicopter rotors. The brightly lithographed ship has a picture of itself in flight. Two plastic structures hold the rotors and there is a forward plastic control center with two pilots. The spaceship has a two stage action: first it advances with spinning rotors and flashing lights, then it stops and two flaps on the wing open to reveal litho characters beneath. The box has a superb illustration of the toy flying through space. ME632

The litho varies and the shape of the gun platform is different from the US version, being long and thin rather than triangular. Tinplate spaceships revolve around a system of pulleys across the tinprinted display, a separate tinprinted base clips to the display and is complete with a spring loaded gun, made to fire ball bearings at the passing spaceships.
