ROBBY ROBOT

Maker: Yonezawa

One of the desirable trio of Yonezawa classics. All are based on the same body, leg and arm pressings, the differences being confined to the heads. Since Yonezawa recycled the body, I'm going to recycle the description: It is remarkable what a new head can do to invigorate a robot. Yonezawa used the body, with no modifications at all, (not even the blue metallic paint) as the basis for two other robots: Robby the Robot, and the Roby Robot. It is a simple wind-up mechanism with the switch in the lithoed front panel. The arms are feeble flat claws dangling from two dome structures. There's no doubting that the style is that of Robby from the 'Forbidden Planet'. The legs display the typical bulbous styling so common in robots.

The simplicity of design is mirrored in their clockwork mechanisms. They shuffle forward with a simple sparking effect.

'Robby' isn't a very helpful name for a robot because there are so many of the buggers. It's nearly as bad as 'Space Patrol'. I don't know the nickname for this robot and 'blue Robby wind up astronaut' doesn't have much of a ring to it. Robby's individuality lies in his distinctive astronaut head. It is a large cylindrical metallic dome with a window panel revealing the young boy astronaut inside the suit.
