WINKY

Maker: Yonezawa

Four Yonezawa robots share a common pressing: these are the Winky robot, the wind up Space Explorer, the wind up friction powered Space Scout and the Telephone Robot. They constitute an elegant group of early robots. From the waist down the first three are identical in shape, though the Space Scout has an impressive white painted finish, unlike the hammered silver-grey of the other two. The Telephone Robot is a more radical variation.

I finally got to see the box for this robot and it is indeed called Winky Robot. The reason is obvious: you move the robot and see a three-stage animation in the raster screen eyes. The ears are unusual: they are pointed hard rubber ones, unlike the more usual metal domes. There's a large red spark window for a mouth and a little nose. Winky looks comical, a pleasant change from the serious robots of the time. In his chest is an oxygen meter, with a pointer that rises and falls as he walks. The box art work is a very slight reworking of the Space Explorer box (see below): the head has been altered but everything else is the same. I'm aware of two colour variations: the standard steel-grey with a black dial and a blue-grey version with a white dial. The blue version is slightly harder to find.

Note dial variation.
