MECHANICAL WALKING SPACEMAN

Maker: SY

In addition to the flapping feet robots, SY produced some more conventional walking robots. There are very similar in design, but their boxes, which are rather difficult to obtain, do make them very distinct. These are the Mechanical Walking Space Man robots. I don't know if there are nicknames to sort out the name confusion, so 'the dark grey SY spacemen' will have to do for now. The dark bodies are relieved by copious litho lining.

There are in fact three distinct versions: one has a spinning circular antenna (K #91), a second has a small red 'pip' on its head (K #90), whilst the third has nothing on its head and has box-shaped feet - silver or red. The arms of all versions are designed to swing slightly as the robot walks. There's a fragile spring attached to a flat strip which in turn is attached to the leg spindles.

For the technically minded the later version is part of a simplification of the robot for cutting down production time: the robot has only a single metal shaft inside each leg instead of the more usual two. SY have engineered the casing of the leg to act as the 'missing' shaft and you can see a rivet which fixes this structurally to the square foot. The earlier round foot would not permit this fixture.
