R-35

Maker: Masudaya

Thanks to Bill Hibdon for this rare box variation. This is the plastic remote control R-35. Bill explains that the remote was packed on top of the legs (instead of underneath, as with the tin remote version) - thus the box height is different

Another robot with the undistinguished official name "Electric Remote Control Battery Operated Robot". Luckily this guy has R-35 in large red letters tattooed on his back, so that's the preferred name. This Masudaya robot is far from rare: it turns up regularly and a boxed example should not break the bank. But rarity isn't everything, and the R-35 is, by any standards, on of the greats. This is such a good-looking toy. The heavily lithographed body is capped with a pressure-cooker head. The eyes bulge within their thick black rims, and the tiny sprouting ears are reminiscent of earlier days. The feet are joined together and movement is effected by two spikes that emerge from below, giving a waddling walk. The arms are the same pressing as for the Lantern Robot, but the thin metal hands have an articulated thumb.

There are two versions of this robot: the first has a grey body and comes complete with a brightly lithoed battery box picturing three robot silhouettes striding forward. The second version is blue bodied and has a plain red remote control box. R-35. It is interesting to note that the later R-35 with the red plastic controller has a small black connecter with 2 pins that join the controller wire to the robot body. This is great for displaying the robot without the usual problem of how to arrange the wire and where to postion the controller. This version is featured in the 1963 catalog.

A few years ago there was a find of these robots. Someone had taken advantage of the bright yellow flashlight beam on the box cover to advertise the selling price $1.69 in thick black marker pen.
