PATROL ROBOT

Maker: Yonezawa Prototype

Oh boy, what a spectacular robot this is! If you thought Robocop was original then think again, because Yonezawa (who else) beat them to the idea of a robot policeman by 30 years. And it's every bit as impressive as the Hollywood version. I notice that it's unarmed, so I wonder how long it would last on the beat?

sadly it's a prototype that never made it into production. What a shame. The only example I am aware of is in the Kitahara collection. Even he has no box, and I 'm not aware if the robot's real name is known. It's traded so infrequently, if at all, that even the nickname is academic.

The Patrol Robot is obviously a reworking of the Smoking Robot (Smoking Spaceman). The body, legs and arms are all from the same mold and have the distinctive square battery compartment legs. The clear square dome has been replaced with a siren, and there's a V-shaped face visor. The chest has lost its meters and switches, and it's acquired a wonderful police badge together with a yellow litho belt. Apart from these cosmetic changes there's no hiding the Y robot below. Of course the blue and red paint job have made the Patrol robot much more colourful than its subdued relatives.

I have not seen this robot in action but I understand that it advances with a loud siren noise, while the red chest light flashes, and smoke is emitted from somewhere behind that visor. I can only imagine how great this looks when the switch is thrown.

If you were in any doubt about who made the best robots, then this guy would convince you that Yonezawa are head and shoulders above the rest. The Smoking Robot is already one of the finest of robot shapes, but this variation is even more intriguing.
