Made by Masudaya (Modern Toys) he toy is basically rare, it has beautiful lithography, a battery box with that naive 1950's space artwork, a quaint appearance, a particularly detailed astronaut face, separate oxygen tanks and a superb box. What a combination.

The box and remote control unit call him Space Commando, but on his chest he's Space Man. Since the toy more usually surfaces without the box, the latter name is more commonly encountered.
 

This wonderful astronaut is a close relative of the much more common R35 robot. The top portion of the structure has altered, but the underlying mechanism and the feet are the same. It waddles forward as pins emerge from the base. The head is a particularly good one: a tin helmet has a cut away visor panel that reveals an independently moving head. It's definitely a cut above the average astronaut head.
