CHIEF SMOKY (MR CHIEF)

Maker: KO Yoshiya

Chief Smoky (or Mr Chief) is probably the hardest to find of the large Yoshiya skirted robots (See Chief Robot Man and Mighty Robot). The name confusion arises because the box calls him Chief Smoky and the art work depicts the robot with that name on his chest plate. The actual robot, however, can have either Chief Smoky or Mr Chief wording. To make things more confusing, the box give him the extra title of Advanced Robotman.

The high price reflects its relative scarcity rather than anything special in the action. As with its partners, Yoshiya have concentrated on creating an interesting head to provide the novelty. They decided to make use of the great battery op toy feature, smoke. There's a tiny tube protruding from the large domed head. A bellows arrangement puff out streams of smoke as the robot glides around. The head turns and lights internally. It's a politically incorrect robot on 20 a day.

The obvious problem with this toy is that the smoke mechanism sometimes fails. In principal there's no reason why it should run out, but badly stored units do have a habit of drying up. Mechanical failure is rare, though the bellows mechanism can develop holes. There is a set way of handling a non-smoker. First, try fresh decent quality batteries. If that fails place a couple of drops of oil in the tube and let it soak in. Finally, leave it alone! Smoke mechanisms are not an amateur repair job. The other comments about repairing the Chief Robot Man apply.
