Mighty Robot - The Athlete
Maker: Yonezawa
Yonezawa's Mighty Robot actually lives up to its title unlike the other puny robots that share the name. The nickname 'Athlete Robot' is used to distinguish it, and its a very apt choice considering its action. This is one of the larger wind up robots, with a big, strong motor to drive it. Its principal feature is the movement of the arms: they rise and flex in a typical bodybuilder manner. Other robot have arms which lie at right angles to the body (Yonezawa Space Explorer, Alps Television Spaceman) but none have this articulated forearm.
The components for this robot are, as far as I can make out, one off. The substantial tin body has considerable litho dial detailing. There is a very large grey plastic head with transparent red plastic features. Over all it is, perhaps, a robot that is lacking in character as a display piece. Similarly the box art, a plain picture of the toy on an equally plain two-tone background, is hardly inspiring. Like so many robots, this one only comes to life when the key is wound and the guy moves. It strides forward briskly showing off his biceps. There is a rarer box variation.
This is a fairly late robot, appearing in the Yonezawa catalog for 1967 (though it certainly predates this by a year or two).
